COIN fans will want to keep an eye out for errors on their pieces – as “double die” versions can make them hundreds of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TikTok<\/a> user Diggin Dave<\/a>, who is a fan of coin<\/a> roll hunting and metal detecting, recently did this exact thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TikTok user Diggin Dave found a George Washington bicentennial quarter minted in 1976<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It could be worth up to $200 according to Dave, but a similar version sold for $3,246 at an auction a few years ago<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While going through a coin roll, he claims to have found a George Washington<\/a> bicentennial quarter minted in 1976.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The text features a double die error<\/a>, which means the coin could be worth $150 to $200, according to Dave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The error refers to the duplicate of particular elements on the coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this case, the letters “R”, “E” and “B” in the word Liberty were all doubled on the left-hand side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coin was first produced in 1975 in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the independence of the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was minted in the years 1975 and 1976 and features the dual dates of 1776-1976 on the actual coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dave said in the video: “I just found an incredible find. I actually found one last year, it’s extremely rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I always check my 1976 Denver bicentennial quarters for the FS-101, or double die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then put the coin under a microscope to show the doubling of the text, and added: “Very rare quarter I just found in a roll.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As always, the value of any coin is only how much someone else is willing to pay for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, you’re not guaranteed to get hundreds or thousands if you have a similar one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, a double die Denver bicentennial quarter sold for $3,246, according to the Professional Coin Grading Service<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, in July 2022, another bicentennial quarter sold for $128 on eBay<\/a> after attracting eight bids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It didn’t have the double die error, but had instead been struck off-center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most valuable coins are usually those with a low mintage or an error, as they’re deemed the most valuable by collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To find out if your small change could be worth a fortune, check how much the specific coins are selling for on eBay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Search the full name of the coin, select the “sold” listing and then toggle the search to “highest value”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will give you an idea of the amount of money that the coin is going for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can either choose to sell the coin on eBay or through a specialist site such as Coinappraiser or USA Coin Book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you choose eBay, remember to set a minimum price that is higher or at the very least equal to the face value of the coin – or you’ll make a loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You also need to be aware that even if your coin \u201csells\u201d on eBay for a high price there\u2019s no guarantee that the buyer will pay up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In its terms and conditions, eBay states that bidders enter a \u201clegally binding contract to purchase an item\u201d, but there\u2019s no way to enforce this rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most eBay can do is add a note to their account for the unpaid item or remove their ability to bid and buy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
