The date, the word &#8220;liberty,&#8221; and the motto all appear to be double-stamped on the coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An especially valuable one is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/topic\/rare-coins-and-valuable-notes\/\">&nbsp;1969-S Lincoln Cent<\/a>&nbsp;of the obverse variety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having one of these is essenitally like having a winning lottery ticket, said Shaun from\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@blueridgesilverhound\/video\/7103706598736088366?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7103706598736088366\" target=\"_blank\">BlueRidgeSilverHound\u00a0<\/a>on TikTok.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.jlbn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/double-effect-m-coin-expert-error-date-lincoln-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"593\" height=\"959\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.jlbn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/double-effect-m-coin-expert-error-date-lincoln-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10638\" srcset=\"http:\/\/blog.jlbn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/double-effect-m-coin-expert-error-date-lincoln-1-1.jpg 593w, http:\/\/blog.jlbn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/double-effect-m-coin-expert-error-date-lincoln-1-1-186x300.jpg 186w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 593px) 100vw, 593px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Finding the right coin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgs.com\/coinfacts\/coin\/1969-s-1c-doubled-die-obverse-rd\/2923\" target=\"_blank\">Professional Coin Grading Services<\/a>\u00a0(PCGS) explained this coin was tainted by counterfeits, landing it on America&#8217;s &#8220;Most Wanted&#8221; list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two men &#8211; Roy Gray and Morton Goodman &#8211; began producing fake coins with matching double dies to fool collectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roy asked coin collector Robert Teitelbaum to help him sell the coins, and they eventually made over $92,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Roy asked Robert to put a few coins into circulation in Washington, Robert turned them over to the Secret Service instead, ending the counterfeit ring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s believed less than 100 authentic 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse cents were produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can spot one by seeing if the date, &#8220;liberty,&#8221; and &#8220;in God we trust,&#8221; are all doubled up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An authentic coin will not have a double mint mark, since those were added later in production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These coins sell for upwards of $100,000, including one that sold for $126,500.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>More valuable pennies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another rare and valuable penny is the 1992 Close AM Penny, with one example\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgs.com\/auctionprices\/item\/1992-1c-close-am-bn\/412708\/3163401233446665042\" target=\"_blank\">selling for $5,000<\/a>\u00a0in a January auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a&nbsp;TikTok, Blake Alma of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@coinhub\/video\/7121493047392718122?is_copy_url=1&amp;is_from_webapp=v1&amp;item_id=7121493047392718122\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CoinHub<\/a>&nbsp;explained how to spot one of these rare coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PCGS explained the Close AM penny was likely part of an experimental coin to see what a new design would look like on the back of the 1993 pennies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The front of the coin shows the 1992 year and has no mint marking beneath this date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the back, the A and M in America are so close they&#8217;re almost touching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And older pieces like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/money\/5971598\/rare-penny-find-how-numbers\/\">1788 Massachusetts cent<\/a>&nbsp;are also very valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The design depicts an image of a Native American on the obverse holding a bow and arrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surrounding the image is the text \u201cCommon\u201d and \u201cWealth\u201d on opposite sides.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the date is 1788, which can be spotted on the bottom center of the reverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One in \u201cMS66BN,\u201d which is an uncirculated grade, sold for a total of $37,600 in a January 2015\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgs.com\/auctionprices\/item\/1788-cent-massachusetts-period-bn\/948\/-6565130300780288071\" target=\"_blank\">auction<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, the 1788 penny that sold for $5,000 after 22 bids in the recent\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/154988879601?hash=item24160e9ef1%3Ag%3Am4QAAOSw2sliesdT&amp;nma=true&amp;si=k9QnQcQEY8mPebU4bhmTXzG76EQ%253D&amp;orig_cvip=true&amp;nordt=true&amp;rt=nc&amp;_trksid=p2047675.l2557\" target=\"_blank\">eBay listing<\/a>\u00a0was certified by PCGS in a VF Detail grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sun broke down how to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/money\/3961506\/where-find-rare-valuable-coins-lincoln\/\">find rare coins<\/a>&nbsp;including ones featuring Lincoln.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, see which coins could be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/money\/4556988\/rarest-valuable-coins-presidents-lincoln-jefferson-washington\/\">worth upwards of $260,000.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COIN collectors have been able to make over $100,00 from a single penny.
