{"id":9781,"date":"2022-06-23T17:38:26","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T22:38:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.jlbn.net\/?p=9781"},"modified":"2022-06-23T17:38:28","modified_gmt":"2022-06-23T22:38:28","slug":"mark-zuckerberg-just-hinted-at-an-operating-systems-for-meta-and-said-he-expects-the-metaverse-to-generate-hundreds-of-billions-in-revenue-by-the-end-of-the-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blog.jlbn.net\/?p=9781","title":{"rendered":"Mark Zuckerberg just hinted at an operating systems for Meta and said he expects the metaverse to generate hundreds of billions in revenue by the end of the decade"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul><li>The Facebook founder and CEO is anticipating business success with the metaverse later this decade.<\/li><li>A Facebook operating system may be needed &#8220;in order to deliver on what we want to build,&#8221; he said.<\/li><li>The company division working on the metaverse is losing billions of dollars a quarter.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A Meta Platforms-built operating system could be in the future as Mark Zuckerberg plans for the metaverse to be a major part of the company&#8217;s business this decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zuckerberg did not reject the idea of creating an operating system for his company&#8217;s various platforms and hardware in order for the technology still being built to create the metaverse, an immersive virtual reality, to function properly when asked about it on CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Mad Money.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta, which changed its name from Facebook late last year, has never had an operating system of its own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think over the long term, we will need this level of integration between hardware and software and an operating system, just to deliver on what we want to build,&#8221; Zuckerberg said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that by the end of this decade, he expects 1 billion users of the metaverse, each spending &#8220;hundreds of dollars&#8221; a year on various products, like virtual goods for spaces and avatars. That suggests he&#8217;s expecting the metaverse to generate hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue by the end of the decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our playbook has been to over time build our services and get them to as many people as possible, to get to 1 billion or 2 billion users and scale from there,&#8221; Zuckerberg said. &#8220;The metaverse is going to be a big leg of our business over the next several years, the second half of this decade, too.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reality Labs, the metaverse division at Meta, is currently a money-losing effort. It lost just under $3 billion in the first quarter, after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebooks-metaverse-business-completely-misses-wall-street-expectations-reality-labs-2022-2?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">losing $10 billion<\/a>&nbsp;last year, spooking Wall Street enough that Zuckerberg said he was planning to &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-slowing-pace-of-spending-on-new-projects-like-metaverse-2022-4?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slow the pace<\/a>&#8221; of new investments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Internally, too, the company&#8217;s shift to building the metaverse, as well as Zuckerberg&#8217;s personal focus on the technology, has caused some&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-yahoo-insiders-comparison-metaverse-pivot-stock-struggles-2022-4?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">concern<\/a>, frustration and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/mark-zuckerberg-metaverse-obsession-driving-some-employees-nuts-2022-4?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confusion<\/a>, with one current employee telling Insider there is &#8220;no coherent strategy&#8221; for the project, as of yet. Since Zuckerberg said in April he was going to &#8220;level set on our business trajectory,&#8221; the company has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/leaked-facebook-memo-details-hiring-freeze-negative-business-impacts-2022-5?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">broadly frozen hiring<\/a>, as Insider first reported, leading to concerns about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/facebook-meta-insiders-concerned-layoffs-are-coming-hiring-freeze-2022-5?utm_medium=referral&amp;utm_source=yahoo.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">future layoffs<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Zuckerberg made clear that his expectation is for his company&#8217;s version of the metaverse to be a sizable part of its business in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We will get there,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Facebook founder and CEO is anticipating business success with the metaverse later this decade.
