Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee wants to rescue his creation from centralization. But does he align himself with Web3\u2019s promise of salvation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At TNW Conference<\/a>, the computer scientist gave a word-one answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cNope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n That snub may seem to clash with Berners-Lee\u2019s recent actions. The 67-year-old now campaigns to save his \u201cdysfunctional\u201d brainchild<\/a> from the clutches of Big Tech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He\u2019s also made a cool $5.4million<\/a> by selling an NFT<\/a> \u2014 one of Web3\u2019s supposed pillars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the Brit has his own vision for the web\u2019s successor: a decentralized architecture that gives users control of their data<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Berners-Lee want to build it on a platform he calls Solid<\/a> \u2014 but you can call it Web 3.0<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe did talk about it as Web 3.0 at one point, because Web 2.0 was a term used for the dysfunction of what happens with user-generated content on the large platforms,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cPeople have called that Web 2.0, so if you want to call this Web 3.0, then okay.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n On the blockchain, it just doesn\u2019t work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Berners-Lee shares Web3\u2019s purported mission of transferring data from Big Tech to the people.
