JLBN – Setup Password Protection on WAMP

In this guide for WAMP, we will show you how to install and setup password for WAMPSERVER. There are too many ways to setup password, but here we only show the easiest but security way for WAMP

Note: Before attempting any change, even the first time password setup, you should perform a full backup; check the Setup Backup guide for WAMP on this website.

Note: Even this guide is used for Wampserver, you can apply this method on other wamp package such as Xampp, EasyPHP, so on. Just make sure to select correct file(s) in proper location(s) 😉

    Hi…

Thank you so much for this very-easy-to-follow (especially with the added pictures) guide. I spent a whole day getting frustrated by the password %&^&@# on WAMP server, then I stumbled upon this site. Thanks again :)…

This was fantastic, I nearly went insane trying to get my password working before I followed this tutorial. Only one complaint though, not even a complaint just a mention, the english used in the tutorial was a little broken, maybe the author was a non-english speaker!

Great tutorial, really helped me a lot!

    @ JL

yes, but I did not change the server auth type to ‘cookie’ as I want phpMyAdmin to log on automatically as I will be the only user…

btw, what is the blowfish / passphrase needed for ??

    Thanx.

blowfish is used to encrypt your password, and if you don’t want to the log in screen, you still need to set it up 😉

      @ John Walsh
      he he… he he… 😉
you’re right and if you don’t mind, you can help us to improve it 😉

    Hi,

have a problem here, although I followed your guide.

I have 2 root users, one with an IP address under HOST, the second one with localhost under HOST.

After I changed / set up the password for the first root user, I still get the error message that there is a root user without a password.

Once I change / set up a password for the SECOND root user, phpMyAdmin will not work anymore – outputting:

#1045 – Access denied for user ‘root’@’localhost’ (using password: NO)

    What I have also tried:

    1. tried to delete the second root user, it will give me the same 1045 error message after I deleted the account

    2. I used a different password for the second root user, it still outputs the 1045 error message

    Any suggestions ? 😉

    Thanx in advance.

    – M

Thank you for this guide! One thing that had me chasing my tail for a bit was that I had IIS installed as well. That gave me the yellow icon for WAMP and asked for a login on localhost. After finding out that the login was due to a setting in about:config for FF I then had to uninstall IIS and now everything works properly.

    Excellent guides, thanks a bunch!

I had to relax my Google Chrome cookie setting a notch in order to log into the now passworded phpmyadmin, but once I got it, I set Chrome back to restrict 3rd party cookies, and I can still login.

Please help! I restored wamp and found the entire website back to the backup date. How do I get mySQL to at least show the more recent changed tables from another disk instead of the old ones? Or how do I recreate the overwritten newer httpd.conf? Thanks.

I am new user i set password for mysql using mysql console and opened phpmyadmin it throws the similiar error can you help me i didn’t see the window that you are posted in links.

    MySQL said: Documentation
#1045 – Access denied for user ‘root’@’localhost’ (using password: NO)
phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server.

Prakash, it seems you missed a step or 2, so download resetmysql here then start the guide from beginning

Hi, followed your password guide and have a root password set, but now i can’t access any of my files through the web server, just get a 403 forbidden message. There isn’t a prompt for a password at all.
Any help you could offer would be appreciated.

Michael, it seems you didn’t follow all the steps, so suggest to go through them all to make sure you didn’t miss any step; however, if still can’t figure out, redo all steps after download and apply resetmysql here

Just a quick comment here :

Using the ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, it will block the access to these setup pages, requiring for enabling cookies, despite they are, both in your browser and in the ZA setup.
